Ĭoating is most often done to allow ships to bypass the Red Line, with a stop at Fish-Man Island, by allowing ships to sail through a gigantic, though tiny in the grand scheme of things, hole in the Red Line at the bottom of the ocean, 10,000 meters deep. ![]() This give the crew a supply of breathable air while they are underwater.Ĭoating is a very delicate procedure and must be done carefully, as any error in its application could compromise the bubble during the trip, causing the ship to be crushed by the pressure if it goes deep enough. Once the crew wishes to depart, they drain the air from that bubble into the coating, causing it to inflate. Once the coating is applied, the only thing keeping the ship from sinking on the spot is a giant air bubble underneath. A coating surrounds a ship in a bubble-like membrane which renders the ship less buoyant than the water around it, causing it to sink.
